Project Background
This project is the refurbishment to the Kitchen, Dining and exterior spaces of a lovely 19thC ex-train station in West Edinburgh.
The building had previously been extended with poor quality infills to the rear of the building creating dark and awkward spaces that didn’t match the rest of the client’s beautiful home.
Client’s Brief and Our Approach
Our clients came to us for a design that would transform the small and inefficient spaces that lacked natural daylight. The additions also had uninsulated external walls, aluminium framed single-glazed windows and door and poorly insulated flat roof which led to cold and draughty rooms.
By removing a couple of internal walls (non-original) the space is completely opened up, giving a more generous and sociable space that improves the connection between the dining room and the outdoor terrace to give them a larger space for entertaining.
The project also involved replacing the poor quality roof and wall with insulated construction, new double glazed units to improve the thermal comfort internally and new rooflights to provide daylight deep into the plan.
The Result
In addition to opening up the space, the structure was expressed internally with timber beams and painted steel adding warmth and character to the space. Awkward corners were removed creating a less cluttered and more minimal aesthetic. Together, these changes have transformed the kitchen and dining area into a welcoming heart of the home — a place where the client can cook, come together with friends and family, and entertain in comfort.
