Interiors \ Fabric Repairs \ Sustainable Upgrade

The Vestry, St Mark’s Church Portobello, Edinburgh

Client Location

St Marks Church in Portobello is a Category B listed, Neo Classical building with an imposing semi-circular Doric arched entry.

Celebrating its 200-year anniversary, the B Listed St Marks Episcopal Church in Portobello  has undergone an ambitious conservation lead project, which combines fabric repairs, internal alterations, and refurbishment of key facilities, improving accessibility and thermal comfort to ensure the buildings sustainable future.

A key design intent at the outset was that any modern interventions needed to be integrated with the historic features in a way that highlights and enhances the architectural character of the building.

Externally these interventions included subtle improvements to existing traditional detailing ensuring the longevity of the upgrades. Internally spatial improvements were made heavily referencing the original style in a contemporary way. The colour scheme was a large part of the internal works, influenced by evidence of previous paint schemes, a bold palette has been applied which highlights the original features.

The key Conservation issues posed by the project were two-fold, both internal and external upgrades were required each presenting different challenges. Significantly the vast majority of issues the building faced were due to inferior fabric detailing leading to condition issues which needed to be resolved.

We developed options for the interior scheme based on discussions with the church, paint scrapings taken during the fabric assessment in the staircase and using historic records of previous internal schemes. Working with the interior architect we finalised a traditional approach to limewash finishes for the plaster surfaces and used colours inspired by site investigations for key circulation and Chancel spaces.

The bold colour chosen for the joinery elements is intended to draw visitors from the entrance towards the Nave and chapel beyond. Original architectural features like the stained glass windows and balustrading are also highlighted in the feature colour bringing the Historic features to the foreground as part of the overall composition.
